Santa Eulalia v Pro Vercelli – Preview

By: Tom B | March 30th, 2009

The next match, however, is probably my most important match of the season, it is a clash of cultures, Spain v Italy. And which Italian giants of the game are we matched against? The one and only Pro Vercelli, as brought to you by Brian Phillips.

I considered myself lucky on 2 accounts – firstly – the year was 2008 and not 2013, by which time Pro Vercelli are in Serie A -secondly – in a bizarre and I feel frankly unforgiveable move, they do not have an assistant manager. Walter Colombo must be polishing glasses somewhere which makes me breathe a sigh of relief, 1-7-3 all crammed down the left… genius. Editors Note: Please click on this link, some of Brian’s finest work.

I’d like to add that this happened by fluke, I didn’t arrange this friendly.

So to the match, my right wing back, Garcia Martinez, was injured, so I had to make a choice, revert to a back 4 with a right back (of which I have 2) or play Manuel (II) out of position as a RWB and bring in the young penalty scoring Antonio as my 3rd centre back. So it was either change the shape to fit the troops, or hope that tactical consistency reigns supreme.

I went with the latter and this along with removing long shots, as we were most inaccurate from outside the box. My whole team now has long shots “rarely”.

Next:
I play the might of Pro Vercelli, former (and once again great) pride of Italy.

I think you should be training your strikers and midfielders in long shots. If you can hit a good long shot, very hard to defend against.
