Pick a Team—Any Team*
By: Dave I | February 27th, 2009
Because I lack any patience at all, I’m going to going to go ahead and open up the team selection, despite my best intentions to get my ideas from you guys. But here’s the thing, *I have a confession to make: you can’t pick any team. To make the process a little less crazy, I’ve narrowed the selection down to six teams: two from England, two from Italy, and two from Germany. Each of these teams has some aspect of their history (or lack thereof) that makes them stick out from the lower league crowd. And let’s face it, we want this team to stick out—one way or another! So, without further ado, let’s meet the teams.
AS Cisco Roma-
A team that has a great youth system as consistently challenges for the Serie C2 Title, Cisco would enable us to have a very solid youth movement to begin with, as well as start Offside rivalry with AS Roma manager, Dhaw. However, they would be an easier team to start with, since they are already a well established contender. (Theirs is the most badass logo, in my humble opinion, whether they win or not. So they have that going for them… which is nice.)
Poggibonsi-
A team that has played well, but struggled mightily financially in recent times, they have just made it back to Serie C2, and would be a tough team to take to the top with the financial restrictions they are under.
Blyth Spartans-
A team after my own heart, Blyth has the same mascot as my high school, and haven’t won anything important recently, the Spartans are a mediocre member of the Blue Square North at best.
Newport County-
A Welsh team which had a very brief spell of success in the 1980s, their subsequent bankruptcy forced the team to disband. Since their resurrection in the mid 1990s, they have resided in the Blue Square. We could try to find that success again.
Fortuna Dusseldorf-
A team that has bounced back and forth between Bundesliga mediocrity and severe disappointment, Dusseldorf would provide a chance to bring a team that has fallen on heard times back to glory.
Wuppertaler SV Borussia-
Not only is their name fun to say, but Wupertaler has never been to the Bundesliga, only making it past the 3rd division once in their history.
There you have it, your six options. What will it be? Italy? England? Germany? Which story interests you the most? Let me know in the poll below.
You should know that our resident BlogMaster (can I copyright that?), Daryl, has requested a German blog to even out The Offside’s blog lineup. SO, I guess you COULD go along with him, OR you COULD stick it to the man and vote for whoever you REALLY want. You decide.
Which team should we start with in our LLM career?

Dusseldorf gets my vote.
Also, not sure if you have, but if you haven’t, definitely give Brian Phillips’ FM story over at the Run of Play blog a read. The guy is a great writer and the story is really good. He plays with Pro Vercelli in Italy and started in Serie C2. He also didn’t use real players which is where I got the idea to do it for my Paris FC game.

I went with Newport, but I’d be happy to have the lower German leagues represented as well. Looking forward to the blog.

Went with Dusseldorf, no reason really why. Love the picture. “Ruff, just like your mother likes it!”

I went with Wuppertaler.
It’s fun to say, and you’ll be saying it an awful lot on this blog.
Also, I don’t recommend sticking it to the man. When I login, there’s a “delete blog” button. Just saying.

Cisco!!!!!!!!!

Brett, it’s funny you say that because it’s one of my favorite blogs (outside of The Offside of course)– kind of where I got the idea too.
Daryl, you know I appreciate your help to much to WANT them to “stick it to the man.” I’m just saying… hypothetically… they COULD.

Wuppertaler SV Borussia-
something screams turn me into a badass, maybe its the “only making it past the 3rd division once in their history.” part.

Poggibonsi looks even runner to say, but I voted for cisco Roma

although, if you were going soley on names you should pick shrewsbury town or kidderminster harriers!

Up until recently Shrewsbury’s home games wre played at a stadium called Gay Meadow. No word of a lie I’ve been there. It was right on the river and used to get flooded a couple of times a season so they moved recently. I voted for Blyth only on the basis that I’ve seen the real team play what was Leigh RMI.

As of 5:45, the polls are closed, I took a screen shot of the results, which will part of the next post, later today.

At a push I’d vote for Cisco Roma, but I think one Italian C2 side is missing from this list – Pro Vercelli. They have more of a history than anyone in the lower leagues, having won the Serie A title seven times between 1908 and 1921. They’re now a fairly stable mid table Serie C2.
